Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 Campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has expressed optimism that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will give his assent to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2024, also known as the anti-LGBTGQ+ bill.
In an interview on Accra-based JoyNews, Aboagye highlighted that the President has not shown any support for LGBTQ activities, indicating his belief that once the bill reaches the President, he will sign it into law.
Aboagye emphasized the importance of being open to criticisms of the bill, noting that laws are not perfect and adjustments are necessary to better serve the nation’s needs.
These comments follow Vice President Dr. Bawumia’s public rejection of LGBT+ activities during his address to the Muslim community in Kumasi. Dr. Bawumia, aligning his stance with Islamic teachings and Ghanaian societal norms, expressed his strong opposition to LGBTQ+ practices in the country.
Dr. Bawumia’s firm stance against LGBTQ+ activities has been praised by the Association of Progressive Muslims, Ghana, who welcomed his position on the matter.
However, there is mounting pressure on Dr. Bawumia to persuade President Akufo-Addo to sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill into law. Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has advised Dr. Bawumia to ensure the bill is signed into law if President Akufo-Addo travels outside the country.
The ongoing debate surrounding LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana highlights the intersection of cultural, religious, and legal perspectives on sensitive issues, shaping public discourse and decision-making on the matter.
