The Maytals, also known as Toots and the Maytals from 1972 to 2020, are a Jamaican musical group and one of the most well-known ska and rocksteady vocal groups. The Maytals were instrumental in popularizing reggae music after its formation in the early 1960s.

The group’s frontman, Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, was born in 1942 in May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica, as the youngest of seven children. He grew up in a church choir, singing gospel music, and moved to Kingston in the late 1950s.
