Edmund I of England was born in 920 or 921. He was the eldest child of King Edward the Elder and Queen Eadgifu, his third wife, and the grandson of King Alfred the Great. Thelstan, Edward’s eldest son and Edmund’s half-brother, succeeded his father after his passing in 924.

Edmund was crowned after Thelstan’s childless death in 939. He had two sons, Eadwig and Edgar, from his first marriage to lfgifu, but none from his second marriage to thelflaed. His boys were still babies when he was slain in a skirmish with an outlaw at Pucklechurch in Gloucestershire. He was succeeded by his younger brother Eadred, who died in 955, and then by Edmund’s sons in that order.

Thelstan became the first king of all of England when he overthrew Viking dominance over York in 927. Anlaf Guthfrithson, however, was acknowledged as York’s king following Thelstan’s passing and extended Viking dominance to the Five Boroughs of northeastern Mercia.

Edmund first accepted the reverse because it was the West Saxon dynasty’s first substantial loss since Alfred’s tenure, but after Anlaf’s death in 941, he was able to reclaim his position. In 944, Edmund reclaimed control over the Five Boroughs and all of England when he drove the Viking lords of York out of York.
