The elite bodyguard of the King of the Andals and the First Men, Barristan Selmy served as the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Barristan is a member of House Selmy, a diminutive house in the Stormlands, and a servant of House Baratheon at Storm’s End. He is the first child born to Ser Lyonel Selmy of Harvest Hall. He is renowned as a very capable warrior even at his elderly age, and he has an unmatched reputation for honor and chivalry. He was a member of Aerys II Targaryen’s Kingsguard and became into one of the Targaryens’ closest allies.

Knight Ser Barristan Selmy served the Kingsguard honorably for more than forty years. Many people in the Seven Kingdoms considered him to be among the most honorable and accomplished swordsmen. He went by the name Barristan the Bold.

He had been a member of King Aerys II Targaryen’s Kingsguard before serving as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard during the reigns of King Robert I Baratheon and, briefly, King Joffrey I Baratheon. After being publically sacked by Joffrey (a serious sin considering the Kingsguard is an appointment that lasts a lifetime), Ser Barristan made the decision to sail to Essos and serve Daenerys Targaryen. He didn’t make any vows in doing this.
