American teacher Mary Katherine Fualaau ( January 30, 1962 – July 6, 2020) admitted to two charges of felony second-degree child rape in 1997.
The youngster was Vili Fualaau, a sixth-grader at an elementary school in Burien, Washington, who was 12 years old when the first sexual encounters took place.
Letourneau was a cheerleader for Servite High School while she was a student at the all-girls Catholic Cornelia Connelly High School in Anaheim, California. Later on, she went to Arizona State University.
How did Mary Kay Letourneau get caught?
On March 4, 1997, Letourneau was taken into custody after her husband’s family called the police.
Regarding two counts of second-degree child rape, Letourneau entered a guilty plea. She had a daughter, her first child with Fualaau, on May 29, 1997, while she was awaiting punishment.
The state wanted to jail her for six and a half years. Her sentence was shortened through a plea deal to six months in the county jail (three of which were suspended) and three years of therapy for sex offenders. She was initially exempt from the sex offender registration requirement.
