The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, is urging stakeholders, especially the media, to help in identifying individuals who transport minors and foreigners to registration centers for enrollment in the voter register.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Madam Jean Mensa emphasized the importance of exposing these actions to ensure the integrity of the voter registration process.
“We would also like to call on you our media partners, to help us to bring these persons who bus minors and foreigners to our centers to light. As the watchdog of our democracy, we trust that we can count on you to do this,” Jean Mensa pleaded with the reporters.
The Commission is making preparations for the upcoming limited voter registration exercise ahead of the 2024 elections and has reiterated its commitment to overseeing a credible, accurate, and transparent election process.
In addition, the EC Chairperson emphasized the need for protocols to be activated for persons with disabilities (PWDs) at registration centers. The Commission has put arrangements in place to ensure that PWDs have easy access to the centers and receive immediate attention.
“Our officers have been directed to make them comfortable by ensuring that they do not join long queues but are afforded the opportunity to be served as soon as they arrive at the centers,” she stated.
The Chairperson highlighted the significance of having a credible voter register for transparent and acceptable elections. Without a reliable voter register, there can be no assurance of transparent and acceptable elections.
The limited voter registration exercise is set to commence on Tuesday, May 7, and will run until Monday, May 27, in preparation for the December 7 general elections. The Commission is determined to deliver a smooth and peaceful electoral process for the upcoming elections.
