Accra experienced a tumultuous morning on Monday as heavy rainfall led to several incidents of trees falling in the city.

These incidents resulted in damage to property and injuries to individuals, with two persons currently receiving treatment at separate hospitals.

One of the incidents occurred at the car park of the Landing Restaurant, where a tree fell on a vehicle, causing one person to sustain injuries and seek treatment at the Airport Clinic. Another alarming incident took place along the Italian Embassy stretch, where a tree fell on both a motorbike and a 4-wheel drive vehicle, leaving one individual in critical condition. The aftermath of this event led to roadblocks in the area, further complicating the situation.

Describing the harrowing experience, a driver involved in one of the incidents stated, “I was just about to get out of my car when I heard the cracking sound. The next thing I knew, the tree crashed down onto the roof of my car. I’m lucky to be alive.”

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service responded promptly to the incidents, underscoring the seriousness of the situation. A spokesperson emphasized that the heavy rainstorm was directly responsible for multiple reports of trees falling.

Authorities are urging residents of Accra to exercise caution, particularly by avoiding parking near trees during heavy rainstorms to mitigate the risk of similar incidents. Additionally, residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts to ensure their safety during this period of intense downpour.

The recent events serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather patterns and the importance of taking precautionary measures to prevent accidents and injuries during severe storms.
