Eminent economist Professor Stephen Adei has highlighted the detrimental effects of the ‘government work’ mentality on productivity in Ghana.
Prof Adei attributes this mindset as one of the lingering remnants of colonialism in the country.
During an interview with GHONE TV, Prof Adei underscored the negative impact of this mentality on the private sector, noting that not only is productivity low, but there is also a culture of sabotage among workers. He expressed concern over the prevalent issue of theft in the workplace, stating that it has unfortunately become a norm.
Furthermore, Prof Adei pointed out a concerning trend where certain positions in companies are being filled by foreigners from countries such as the Philippines and India. He emphasized that Ghanaians are being overlooked for these roles, leading to a sense of frustration among local workers.
The economist’s remarks shed light on a pressing issue that is hindering the growth and development of the private sector in Ghana. As the country strives for economic advancement, addressing the ‘government work’ mentality and promoting a culture of productivity and accountability will be crucial in unlocking the full potential of the workforce.
