The government has assured that the allowances for teachers from the various Colleges of Education who have been on strike will be paid within two weeks.

Despite a court ruling declaring the strike by members of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) as illegal, the teachers have continued their industrial action, resulting in the freezing of salaries for those who did not work in July.

In an interview with JoyNews, the Director for Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, Professor Francis Nunoo, stated that teachers have eight days to resume their duties or risk forfeiting their July salaries. He emphasized that efforts are being made to settle the outstanding allowances, with the payment system already in place.

“We are fact-checking them and based on the availability of national funds, it will hit their account. All the necessary paperwork and processes are being worked on. The payment system has been set up, and we are looking at a maximum of two weeks for the allowances to reach their accounts,” Professor Nunoo explained.

Meetings between the striking teachers and government representatives, including Parliament, are scheduled to take place in an effort to resolve the impasse. Professor Francis Nunoo expressed optimism that the meetings will be fruitful and help avoid the freezing of salaries for non-working teachers.

On the other hand, the National Labour Commission (NLC) has declared that the strike by the teachers is illegal and justified the decision to freeze their salaries. Executive Secretary of the Commission, Ofosu Asamoah, highlighted that the ongoing strike goes against a court injunction and, therefore, constitutes an illegal action.

The NLC further stated that in the event of an illegal strike, the law mandates that the striking workers should not be paid for the period during which they engaged in the illegal strike.

Efforts are being made to find a resolution to the dispute between the government and the striking College of Education teachers to ensure the smooth operation of educational institutions and the wellbeing of the teachers involved.
