The people living in the “Liberia Camp” have been given a three-day notice to leave the area by the Gomoa Fetteh Traditional Council in the Central Region.

The order is given to traders who are impacted by the ongoing Kasoa-Winneba Highway project as the traditional authorities attempt to demolish the former refugee camp and build a market.

Everyone in the camp has three days to leave, according to Odikro of Kasoa CP Nana Bentum Okyerefu, who made this announcement in a media statement.

“It’s urgent, so we’re giving the government or the people three days.” Additionally, Nana Kwesi Kwaansah, the Omankrado of the Gomoa Fetteh Traditional Council, pleaded with the government to abstain from interfering with the decision made by traditional authorities to destroy the camp.

The traditional council points to earlier instances of government inaction in the face of appeals that forced the local government to start the demolition process.

“We plead with the government to stay out of this because the traditional authorities have earmarked the place for development since the government has refused to heed our call for this exercise,” Nana Kwesi Kwaansah said in response to concerns about the government’s intervention. Thus, we have decided to carry out the exercise ourselves.

The Gomoa East District Assembly and traditional authorities have attempted to demolish the “Liberia Camp” in the past, but their efforts have not been successful. Therefore, this most recent attempt is not unprecedented.
