GNAT General Secretary, Thomas Musah Tanko, has revealed that there will be more agitations by pre-tertiary teachers before the end of this week. This comes as a result of the failure of the government to implement the conditions of service of teachers, which have been expired for about nine years now.
In an exclusive interview with our correspondent Daniel Opoku, Thomas Musah expressed his dissatisfaction with the ongoing demonstrations by teachers in the Volta and Greater Accra regions. He criticized the government for deceiving teachers since 2009, stating that whenever teachers ask for something, they are told there are too many of them. He questioned the government’s deliberate policy that teachers must be at the center and demanded evidence to support this claim.
Musah highlighted the struggles of teachers, particularly those in deprived areas, who have only received a professional development allowance of GHC100 in the past eight years. He emphasized the need for teachers to be given what they truly deserve in order to end the agitations.
The leadership of the teacher unions have made it clear that they cannot be blamed if the agitations persist. The call for better treatment and respect for teachers’ welfare continues to be a pressing issue that needs to be addressed by the government.
