The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Ghana Police Service have been given ten days by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to take action regarding the attack on Citi FM’s Mohammed Aminu M. Alabira, the Northern Regional Correspondent, by Farouk Aliu Mahama, the Member of Parliament for Yendi.

When Alabira was covering the mayhem that erupted during the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primary in the Yendi constituency on January 27, 2024, Farouk Mahama and his team were let loose.

Speaking to reporters on February 6, the GJA threatened to advise itself and other organizations like the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), the Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), and the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) to take action if the NPP and police did not act.

The groups demanded that the MP and his thugs be sanctioned to pursue justice for Mr. Alabira from the national and regional NPP leadership.

Additionally, they demanded that the police expedite their investigation and arraign the offenders in front of the court so that they would be subject to the full force of the law for their “distasteful conduct.”

“We are giving each of the NPP’s regional and national branches as well as the Ghana Police Service ten (10) days to respond. The culprits ought to be taken into custody. If they don’t work, we’ll counsel ourselves. Mohammed Amin Alabira, our colleague, deserves justice, and the NPP leadership at the national and regional levels must act to punish the MP and his thugs accordingly.

“The Ghana Police Service ought to expedite the case’s investigations and bring the offenders before the court so they can be held fully accountable for their reprehensible behavior. This time, the police officers were present for the entire incident.

“We are giving each of the NPP’s regional and national branches as well as the Ghana Police Service ten (10) days to respond. The culprits ought to be taken into custody. They insisted, “We shall advise ourselves if they fail.”

The matter is presently being looked into by the Northern Regional Police Command.
