A group of 15 young athletes and three officials from Ghana have recently landed in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire for the Youth Invitational Athletics championships.
This two-day event will take place at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny in Abidjan.
The team representing Ghana consists of athletes under the age of 20, selected from various Senior High Schools and athletic clubs across the country. They will be competing against Burkina Faso, Benin, and the host nation, Cote D’Ivoire, in a 4-Nation Athletics competition.
This initiative by Ghana athletics aims to nurture a new generation of track and field champions, providing valuable competition experience for young athletes. Phillipina Frimpong, the Chief Executive of Ghana Athletics, emphasized the importance of investing in the development of track and field athletes early on, urging corporate entities in Ghana to support these talented individuals.
During the championship, Team Ghana will participate in various events including the 100m and 200m sprints for both boys and girls, as well as hurdles, high jump, and relay races. The competition will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Stade Félix Houphouët Boigny.
Ghana’s success in the Africa Junior Championship in Gambia in 2023, where athletes from Senior High Schools excelled, serves as a testament to the potential of young talent in the country.
After the conclusion of the Youth Invitational Athletics championships, Team Ghana will return home on Sunday.
This event not only provides a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills but also highlights the commitment of Ghana Athletics to nurturing future champions in the sport.
