The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is set to recruit 220 doctors this month to replenish the losses in hospitals across the country.

This announcement was made by the Director-General of the GHS, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, during a working visit to the Tema General Hospital with the President’s representative at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye.

Dr. Okoe-Boye highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare delivery and outlined future plans during the visit. He emphasized the importance of modern information and communication technology in responding to public health threats and managing patient data efficiently.

Under his leadership, the Ministry of Health has collaborated with development partners to implement the Surveillance Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System (SORMAS) nationwide. This initiative has significantly improved disease control and outbreak management procedures, with the Ministry achieving impressive timeliness and completeness for surveillance reports.

Additionally, the implementation of the LightWave Health Information Management System has enabled real-time data access for informed healthcare delivery across hospitals and primary-level facilities.

Dr. Okoe-Boye also discussed plans to integrate modern technology, including eHealth and telemedicine initiatives, in transforming healthcare delivery. A pilot program for telemedicine in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service is set to be introduced, allowing patients to consult with doctors remotely. The government’s e-learning platform for continuous professional development was also commended for its efforts to make learning accessible to all health professionals.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ghana’s efficient crisis management and increased vaccination coverage were highlighted by Dr. Okoe-Boye. Notable achievements include a reduction in malaria-related deaths and improved postnatal care coverage.

The government’s commitment to revamp healthcare infrastructure was emphasized, with various health facilities under construction and completion across the country. Projects include the University of Ghana Medical Center phase two, urology and kidney transplant services rollout, and the professionalization of regional and district hospitals.
