After a valiant showing against Nigeria on Tuesday that ended in a 1-1 draw in Abuja, Ghana has qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Ghana understood that a score draw would be enough to earn their berth in Qatar after the first leg ended 0-0 in Kumasi.
Thomas Partey scored the game-winning away goal in the 10th minute in front of a large crowd at Moshood Abiola Stadium to upset the Super Eagles.
The lead, however, only lasted 12 minutes when Nigeria equalized via to a controversial penalty kick by William Troost-Ekong.
When Dennis Odoi brought Ademola Lookman down in the box, Nigeria gained control of the game and equalized. VAR was called in to make the decision, and William Troost-Ekong made no mistakes from the penalty spot.
Nigeria thought they had taken the lead in the 34th minute, but VAR overturned Victor Osihmen’s shot for offside.
Nigeria had 60% control in the second half and had nine shots, but just one of them was successful in bringing Joe Wollacott into action.
After that, Ghana held on to qualify for a fourth World Cup finals.
