German authorities have made a significant breakthrough in counterintelligence after the arrest of three individuals suspected of spying for China.

The main suspect, identified as Thomas R, is accused of working for the Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) and operating a front company in collaboration with German research organizations.

Prosecutors allege that the network collected sensitive information, including designs for a combat ship engine, to pass on to China. They also claim that Thomas R obtained “innovative technologies for military use” on behalf of an MSS employee, using the front company managed by the other two suspects, Herwig F and Ina F.

A completed project involving high-performance marine engines for combat ships was disclosed during the investigation, with further negotiations about additional projects underway at the time of their arrest. The suspects were apprehended in the western German states of Hesse and North-Rhine-Westphalia.

In addition to the alleged espionage activities, the three individuals are accused of exporting a banned laser to China, violating EU “dual use” regulations that prohibit sending goods with military and civilian applications to specific countries. Germany’s Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, hailed the arrests as a “great success for our counterintelligence,” emphasizing the sensitivity of transferring German technologies for military purposes.

These arrests follow Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s recent visit to Beijing, where he raised concerns about China’s support for Russia since the invasion of Ukraine. It also comes shortly after the detention of two dual German-Russian nationals in Bavaria on suspicion of spying for Russia, highlighting the ongoing security challenges faced by Germany.

The case underscores the importance of vigilance and cooperation in combating international espionage threats, particularly in the context of evolving geopolitical dynamics.

The German authorities’ swift action in dismantling this alleged espionage network demonstrates their commitment to safeguarding sensitive technologies and national security interests.
