Georg Solti, a Hungarian-British pianist, and conductor, achieved worldwide acclaim for his work in opera houses, concert halls, and recording studios.

György Stern was his name when he was born on October 21, 1912, in Budapest, Hungary.

Hungary’s residents were obliged to abandon their Germanic surnames in favor of more Hungarian ones after the First World War. While his father kept his own last name, he gave his children the surname “Solti.”

Georg Solti was engaged as a répétiteur by the Hungarian State Opera not long after receiving his degree in 1930. He began serving as Josef Krips’ assistant in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1932. But when it looked like the Nazis would soon take power, he went back to Budapest. He served as Arturo Toscanini’s assistant in 1937 at the Salzburg Festival in Italy. He had the opportunity to helm “The Marriage of Figaro” in March 1938.
