Galamsey fight has been unsuccessful – Netherlands Ambassador to Ghana

The fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey, in Ghana seems to be losing ground, according to the Netherlands Ambassador to Ghana, Jeroen Verheul.

In an exclusive interview on JoyNews’ AM Show with Benjamin Akakpo, Mr. Verheul expressed his observations regarding the lack of enforcement of laws surrounding galamsey.

He pointed out that there has not been much success in combating illegal mining, with the enforcement of laws proving to be a challenge. Despite an increase in gold production, it is mostly happening in the informal sector rather than the formal sector.

Mr. Verheul also highlighted his reluctance to use the term “galamsey,” as he believes it inaccurately implies something cultural or uniquely African. Instead, he prefers to describe it as small-scale illegal mining.

To address this issue, the Netherlands Ambassador stressed the need for substantial effort, but he expressed doubts about the possibility of curtailing the menace. He mentioned that there are likely parties benefiting from illegal mining, which hinders its cessation.

While acknowledging the lack of expertise to identify these parties, Mr. Verheul emphasized the importance of political will and enforcement capacity in solving the issue. He concluded that Ghana would be able to combat illegal mining if there were a general consensus and commitment to enforcement.
