The National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) National Women’s Organizer, Hanna Bissiw, said that four party members were shot during the Assin North byelection last year.
She stated the group decided to treat the four at the hospital rather than making the situation public.
Nonetheless, Bissiw issued a warning, saying that even though the NDC stands for peace, the party will act if they are offended and that they would not watch for such things to happen leading up to the general elections in 2024.
“We went to Assin North and if you care to know, four of our guys were shot, as a political party we decided not to make noise about it. We carried them to the hospital and said we would walk over the dead and win the election,” she said earlier this week at a stakeholder conference for the National Peace Council.
“They came down and launched on some of our guys in front of some of us. We restrained them, but we are not going to restrain anybody anymore,” she threatened.
She emphasized, urging that the Council investigate incidents of political violence committed by this government. “So, if you talk about peace, respectfully, if we do not want to downplay things that must not be downplayed in this country… let’s tackle it from where the problem is,” she said.
GhanaWeb was unable to locate any instances of gunshots during the voting process, despite reports of skirmishes.
The Supreme Court’s decision to remove Gyakye Quayson, the nominee for the NDC, set off the Assin North bye-election.
It was determined that he had disregarded the application procedures for the 2020 election. With the support of the NDC, he defeated the candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to keep his seat.
