Four additional individuals have been taken into police custody in connection with the recent train accident at Abortia in the Volta Region.
The suspects, identified as Kokou Koudjo, Patrick Kwaku Sosu, Alaza Prosper, and Fiadugbe Emmanuel, have been accused of aiding the truck driver, Abel Adzidotor, in causing damage to a Diesel Multiple Unit train.
The High Court, under the jurisdiction of Justice Mrs Lydia Osei-Marfo, has remanded the accused persons into police custody for further investigations. The prosecution, led by Assistant State Attorney Christabel Selma Anafure, requested the court to refrain from taking the pleas of the suspects until the investigations are completed.
According to the prosecution, the accused individuals were traveling in a Hyundai Gold Truck driven by Dzidotor Abel when they attempted to cross the railway lines at Abortia. Despite knowing the railway lines were not accessible to vehicles, they placed stones on the tracks to create a makeshift path for the truck to pass through. Unfortunately, the vehicle became stuck on the tracks, leading to a collision with the oncoming train during a test run.
The Ghana Railway Corporation’s Engineer, Dr. Divine Olutey, filed the complaint after the incident. The train and the truck sustained significant damage, with the train being sent for examination while the truck was taken to the Juapong Police Station.
The court has provided the accused individuals with time to secure legal representation before the next adjourned date.
