Former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak forward, Edward Afum, has expressed his concerns about the current state of the Ghana Premier League, noting a significant drop in the league’s standard.

Afum, who played for both Kotoko and Hearts of Oak during his career, believes that the league has declined from previous years when players from the domestic league were regularly called up to the national team.

In an interview with Bryt FM in Koforidua, Afum stated, “During my time with Kotoko and Hearts, the league was very competitive. Players were hungry to prove themselves and there was a lot of talent on display. Players from smaller clubs were making a name for themselves and earning national team call-ups.”

However, Afum lamented the lack of consistency among current players in the league, saying, “In this era, footballers are not convincing and consistent. A player can have a great season and then perform poorly the next. The level of talent in the league has dropped significantly.”

Afum also pointed out the role of journalists in the decline of talent in the league, stating, “Players are overhyped these days, and there aren’t as many top players as there were in our time. The difference between our generation and the current one is very noticeable.”

The former striker’s comments shed light on the challenges facing Ghanaian football and the need for a revival of the standards in the Ghana Premier League to ensure the development of top-tier talent.
