Football legend Diego Maradona’s tragic death has been linked to cocaine use, according to a recent medical report.

The report suggests that the World Cup winner’s fatal heart attack in November 2020 may have been brought on by a “toxic substance,” shedding new light on the criminal case against eight doctors and nurses who cared for Maradona in his final hours.

Maradona, who had a long-standing cocaine addiction, was recovering from a brain operation at the time of his sudden death. The doctors and nurses accused of neglecting his care face 25 years in jail if convicted. His psychiatrist, Agustina Cosachov, is among those on trial, with her lawyer acknowledging the possibility of a natural cause for Maradona’s death, as well as the ingestion of a toxic substance.

Maradona, aged 60, passed away at a rented property near Buenos Aires following brain surgery just two weeks prior. His death shocked the nation of Argentina, sparking demands for answers from his family and fans. Following his passing, authorities raided the homes and offices of his doctors and formed a panel of 20 medical experts to investigate the circumstances leading to his death.

The trial in Buenos Aires is set to feature over 200 witnesses and is expected to last several months. The footballing community continues to mourn the loss of one of Argentina’s greatest ever players, as questions surrounding Maradona’s tragic death remain unanswered.
