Florence Kasumba was born in Kampala, Uganda on October 26, 1976. She grew up in Essen, Germany, where she attended elementary and high school. At the age of 12, she was inspired to become a performer after seeing the musical Starlight Express. She graduated from Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Tilburg, the Netherlands, with a degree in acting, singing, and dancing. Kasumba speaks German, English, and Dutch. She currently resides in Berlin, Germany. Kasumba landed her first professional film role, Silke, in the Dutch film hit Ik ook van you, while still in college. She went on to perform in many musicals after graduating from college, including Chicago, The Lion King, Cats, West Side Story, Evita, and Beauty and the Beast. Florence Kasumba traveled to New York City to play the title role in the German premiere of Elton John’s international hit musical Aida. She also played Lisa in the first Mamma Mia! production in Germany.

Her character was credited as a security guard for Black Panther, and she received widespread acclaim for her brief scene in which she threatens Black Widow with the words “Move or you will be moved.” In the Black Panther solo film, Avengers: Infinity War, and the streaming series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Kasumba reprised her role as Ayo, a member of the all-female Dora Milaje fighting squad.
