Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the First Lady, has visited the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) to oversee improvements.

The Rebecca Akufo-Addo Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and the Rebecca Akufo-Addo Sunshine Hostel, both constructed by the Rebecca Foundation, were visited by the two with the First Lady of Guyana, Arya Ali.

She explained that the visit’s goal was to evaluate the facilities’ current state given that they were constructed in 2019 and 2021, respectively.

Along with taking a tour of the facilities, the two gave some donations. Dr. Frank Owusu Sekyere, Director of Medical Affairs at KBTH, stated that many infants who might have otherwise died have benefited greatly from the PICU since its founding.

Giving numbers, he stated that 79 of the 149 children who have been on the ventilator so far have survived thanks to the facility’s ventilatory care.

Before about four years ago, all 149 patients at the clinic were expected to die; therefore, he claimed, things had much changed.

700 kids have benefited from the facility since 2019, according to Prof. Crystabel Enweronu-Laryea, Head of the Department of Child Health.

She claimed that while difficulties still exist, they are specific to all intensive care units (ICUs). The facility was given two split air conditioners by Mrs. Akufo-Addo.

Prof. Awo Renner stated that at any given moment, the Sunshine Hostel, which houses children receiving cancer treatment along with their guardians, hosts between 25 and 30 youngsters, along with their moms and occasionally younger siblings, all of whom receive free housing and food.

She said that this has contributed to a decrease in abandonment rates, which were formerly at 40% and are currently at 15%.

She thanked the First Lady for her assistance and stated that more than 200 youngsters have completed their stay at the facility thus far.

She took great pride in the fact that the hostel was the first of its kind, making it the envy of many nations in Africa and the globe at large when it came to child cancer treatment, as it benefited guardians who would not have been able to go far for a reliable place to stay.

Later, in appreciation for the First Lady’s significant assistance throughout the years, Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KBTH, gave her a photo frame from the hospital’s administration and employees.
