Tom Owen, real name Thomas William Stevenson Rowbotham, was a British actor who appeared in the longest-running sitcom in history, Last of the Summer Wine, as Tom Simmonite from 8 April 1949 until 8 November 2022. He was the son of Bill Owen, who played William “Compo” Simmonite, Tom Simmonite’s father in the show.
As a student assistant at Leatherhead Theatre in 1966, Owen learned stage management. He has an extensive background in repertory acting and directing. Farley, originally played by John Mills in the 1969 version of “Goodbye, Mr. Chips,” was played by Owen. He appeared on Broadway in the Royal Shakespeare Company production of “London Assurance.”
He has been compared to Michael Gambon, John Hurt, and Harold Pinter for his portrayal of Krapp in Fiona Baddeley’s production of Samuel Beckett’s classic drama “Krapp’s Last Tape.” He has appeared in “Lulu” on Broadway. He also made appearances in about 20 pantomimes.
