American child actor Eugene W. Jackson II, who was a regular of the Our Gang short series during the silent Pathé period, was born on December 25, 1916, and passed away on October 26, 2001. Jackson’s character was given the moniker “Pineapple” because of the similarity between his haircut and the form of the pineapple fruit. When he joined the gang, Jackson replaced the show’s first black cast member, Ernie Morrison, who was billed in the series as Sunshine Sammy. In Little Annie Rooney, one of Mary Pickford’s most popular movies, he portrayed the role of “Humidor” (1925). In the lobby of the Mary Pickford Theatre of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood, a sizable movie poster featuring Jackson and the rest of the Little Annie Rooney cast is displayed.
