The Engineering Council of Ghana has expressed concern over the recent arrest of Michael Wiafe, the General Manager of the Ashanti East Office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Mr. Wiafe was taken into custody on April 10, 2024, after overseeing a power disconnection operation at Kumasi Technical University due to non-payment, a move reportedly contested by Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah, who ordered his arrest.
In a released statement, the Council emphasized that Mr. Wiafe was simply carrying out his regular duties related to power distribution and payment recovery. The Council stated, “The Engineering Council is deeply troubled by the ordeal faced by an engineering professional who was simply fulfilling his routine responsibilities of ensuring efficient power distribution and payment recovery.”
The Council called for a prompt and thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the arrest and to prevent any unjustified interference in the professional duties of engineers in the future. They further added, “The council calls on all engineering practitioners nationwide to exhibit restraint while relevant state authorities address the situation.”
The Engineering Council’s plea for an immediate inquiry highlights the importance of safeguarding the work of professionals in their respective fields. It serves as a reminder that enforcing the law should not hinder individuals from performing their duties diligently.
As the situation unfolds, the Engineering Council’s call for a comprehensive investigation aims to uphold the integrity and professionalism of engineering practitioners across the country.
