The Ministry of Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions in Ghana has made a significant announcement regarding the development of the Ghana Labour Market Information System (GLMIS) database. This initiative, led by Minister Ignatius Baffour Awuah, aims to improve service delivery by the Labour Department to job seekers nationwide.
The GLMIS database, accessible online, serves as a vital platform for connecting job seekers with potential employers. It is being developed as part of the Ghana Jobs and Skills Project, funded by the World Bank, to support skills development and job creation in the country.
Minister Baffour Awuah highlighted the importance of this system in providing essential data on skills in demand, identifying training gaps, and enabling informed decision-making by employers in the labour market. Through the GLMIS platform, employers can advertise job vacancies, while job seekers can upload their CVs for potential job matches.
The Minister expressed optimism that the GLMIS will help address challenges such as job mismatch, unemployment, and underemployment that persist in the labour market. By generating timely reports on the state of the labour market, the system will also provide valuable insights for effective policy interventions by the government.
Furthermore, the development of the GLMIS database is expected to tackle logistical and infrastructural obstacles that have hindered the Labour Department from delivering efficient services, thereby enhancing overall service effectiveness.
The implementation of the Ghana Labour Market Information System is a step towards creating a more coordinated and effective labour market in Ghana, ultimately benefiting both job seekers and employers.
