Ella Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917 – June 15, 1996), when she was little, truly desired to be a dancer.

She enjoyed watching street entertainers in Harlem with her companions in the early 1930s. The most well-known Black musicians were also seen by the females performing at larger venues on weekends.

These concert venues, including the Apollo Theater and the Harlem Opera House, allowed amateurs to perform on weekdays. During those amateur nights, performers may compete for the approval of the audience, win cash prizes, and raise their chances of one day getting recognized.

When Ella agreed to participate in one of those amateur nights as a dancer, she had similar dreams. The bashful girl took a big risk by doing it because criticizing a performance would likely result in boos from the audience.

She was frozen with stage fear when the curtain went up for her performance. Her knees felt like pudding, and she was unable to dance. Ella opted on the spur of the moment to sing a Boswell Sisters song when the crowd became restless.

She gained confidence when the orchestra began playing along with her, and she eventually finished the song to the overwhelming ovation of the audience.
