“Operation No Free Consumption” is a two-week nationwide exercise that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has started.

During the exercise, ECG employees will update customer information, collect any arrears, and disconnect customers who owe the business money.

Customers’ non-ECG/Self-Help Electrification Program meters will all have their details recorded by ECG using the Zeus mobile device. For a fee, customers can regularize their status with ECG.

On Thursday, February 1, William Boateng, the head of public affairs at ECG, spoke on the Asaase Breakfast Show and expressed hope that the exercise will enable the business to recover money that is owed to it.

“We are a buying and selling company, so if we have provided you with electricity for a month and you haven’t paid, we implore you to do so via the app,” stated Boateng. “We no longer use cash.

“In order to provide you with an instant bill, we have for the first time introduced a meter reading device similar to the POS [point of sale machine], the Zeus mobile device.

Boateng stated, “We are taking the device out into the field to read meters and adjust any anomalies pertaining to your consumption.”
