The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana is embarking on a mission to register approximately 623,000 first-time voters in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise ahead of the December 7 national elections.
This 21-day exercise, which began on Tuesday, May 7, is taking place in all 258 district offices of the Commission and is scheduled to conclude on Monday, May 27, 2024.
To ensure accessibility for all, the EC has established an additional 785 centres for individuals who may encounter challenges in reaching the district offices. Additionally, 25 public universities have been designated as registration centres to cater to the needs of the eligible applicants.
Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, has emphasized the significance of compiling a credible voter register in preparation for the upcoming elections. She stressed that a transparent election is not possible without a reliable voter register.
Despite the nationwide rollout of the registration exercise, there have been network challenges in five key districts across the country, including Ayawaso West Wougon, Ayawaso Central, Korle Klotey, Ayawaso East, and Ayawaso North, resulting in registration delays. These issues are not confined to specific districts but are indicative of a national problem that could hinder the registration process.
Furthermore, the EC Chairperson has called on the public to cooperate when protocols for persons with disabilities (PWDs) are activated at the registration centres. Special arrangements have been made to ensure that PWDs, including visually impaired individuals, those with physical challenges, and persons with albinism, receive immediate attention without having to wait in long queues.
Madam Jean Mensa also urged stakeholders, particularly the media, to help the Commission in identifying and apprehending individuals who attempt to register minors and foreigners in the national voter register.
