A private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to report an alleged bribery incident involving EC officials during the Ejisu by-election to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for an investigation to be conducted.

The incident, which occurred at the Fumesua Pentecost Church Polling Station on April 30, 2024, saw the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Dr. Kingsley Nyarko, caught on camera giving what appeared to be a white envelope to two Electoral Commission officials.

Speaking on 3FM’s news analysis program, “Hot Edition,” Martin Kpebu emphasized the importance of seeking the truth and called on the NPP MP to admit his wrongdoing. He stated, “He should admit it so that the law will take its course and serve as a warning to the rest of us in society.”

Drawing parallels with the Trump trial in the United States, Kpebu highlighted the importance of speaking the truth and facing the consequences of one’s actions. He urged Mr. Nyarko to be brave and own up to his actions, as he has no excuse being a lawmaker and should be well aware of the laws against corruption and criminal offenses.

In response to the incident, the EC’s Director of Elections, Dr. Serebuor Quiacoe, emphasized the need for thorough investigations before making any further comments. He stated that the Commission needed to determine the nature and purpose of the white object seen in the video before commenting on the matter.

In a later interview with journalists, Mr. Kingsley Nyarko explained that the tense by-election in Ejisu was due to the NPP’s determination to secure victory in an area that had previously been a stronghold for the party. He mentioned that one of the other aspirants, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, had previously served as a Member of Parliament for the area for twelve years.

The call for transparency and accountability in the electoral process remains crucial, and it is essential for all parties involved to uphold the principles of integrity and fairness in elections.
