Heavy rain has been battering Gulf states, causing deadly flash floods and disrupting flights at the world’s second-busiest airport, Dubai International Airport.

The airport is facing very challenging conditions due to the heavy rain, and some passengers were advised not to turn up as areas were inundated with water.

In Oman, the death toll has risen to 19 since Sunday, with the body of a girl found in Saham. Rescue operations are ongoing in the affected areas to assist those in need.

About 290 flights to and from Dubai International Airport were cancelled on Wednesday, with a further 440 flights delayed. The airport, which serves millions of passengers annually, warned that the recovery process would take some time.

Emirates, a major international airline based in Dubai, has suspended check-in for departing passengers until Thursday. Authorities have also warned of more thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds in the forecast.

The United Arab Emirates, Oman’s neighboring country, experienced its largest rainfall event in 75 years, with record-breaking rainfall in some areas. The heavy rain has caused widespread flooding and disruption in the region.

Passengers at Dubai International Airport have faced long delays, with reports of chaotic scenes and lack of information from airline staff. Stranded passengers described the situation as filthy and inhumane, with inadequate provisions for food and water.

The severe weather conditions also impacted Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and other neighboring countries, with videos showing flooded roads and stranded vehicles. The extreme rainfall has been attributed to a combination of factors, including climate change and natural weather patterns.

Efforts are underway to restore normal operations at the affected airports and assist those affected by the floods. The governments of the affected countries have issued warnings and taken precautions to ensure the safety of their citizens.
