President Akufo-Addo has been urged by Amnesty International Ghana to abstain from approving the contentious Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, often referred to as the Anti-LGBTQI+ Bill.
Genevieve Partington, the Country Director of Amnesty International Ghana, contends that the bill infringes on Ghanaians’ right to privacy and that, should it become law, it might have dire consequences.
On Tuesday, March 12, Amnesty International Ghana, a number of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and Attorney General Godfred Dame met and made this call.
Genevieve Partington emphasized how those who are seen as homosexuals may be affected if the President approves the law.
“We implore the President to veto the bill, as it will have disastrous effects on Ghana.”
Furthermore, Madam Partington called on the government to uphold its duty to defend the rights of every person, irrespective of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
She requested that human rights issues including the bills pertaining to community sentencing, the death penalty, and witchcraft accusations be swiftly addressed by the Attorney General.
