Samuel Frederick Smith was born in London, England on May 19, 1992. Frederick Smith and Kate Cassidy are their parents. They were a member of Youth Music Theatre UK as a child and performed in various productions.

They also studied singing and songwriting for several years with singer Joanna Eden and went to St Mary’s Catholic School in Bishop’s Stortford.

Early in their career, Smith independently published the singles “Bad Day All Week” and “When It’s Alright” (both were released prior to 2010).

Smith had his first big exposure to a large audience in October 2012, with the release of Disclosure’s track “Latch.” Smith provided the vocals for the song, which peaked at position eleven on the UK Singles Chart.

His quick ascent to fame was aided by the track’s popularity. The next year, he released “Lay Me Down” off his debut album (2013). In the same year, he contributed to Naughty Boy’s “La La La” song, which made its UK Singles Chart debut at No. 1.
