He has previously worked as Mike and Kyle Shanahan’s longtime assistant. McDaniel served as an assistant coach with the Houston Texans, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons, and San Francisco 49ers between 2017 and 2021.

He first held the position of offensive coordinator in 2021. McDaniel has played in two Super Bowls, the first one with the Falcons in 2017 and the second with the 49ers in 2020.

McDaniel played with the 49ers for five seasons, primarily as the run game coordinator. McDaniel served as the offensive coordinator that season before departing to become the Dolphins’ head coach; his stint came to an end with their second trip to the NFC Championship Game in three seasons.
