The Department of Social Welfare in the Upper East Region recently conducted a sensitization program for residents in the Logre-Zogin and Logre-Kolkpeng communities in the Nabdam District.
The focus of the program was on child protection issues such as child labor, teenage pregnancies, school dropouts, and illegal mining activities.
The objective was to educate the residents, including persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups, on the importance of protecting children and preparing them for a better future.
Gabriel Azagsa Apobona, the Nabdam District Officer at the Department of Social Welfare, highlighted the impact of illegal mining activities on children in the area. He expressed concern about children dropping out of school to loiter at the mines, emphasizing the need for education and guidance to help them realize their potential.
Apobona also stressed the importance of linking vulnerable children, including orphans and disabled individuals, with the necessary support from the government through the Common Fund allocated for such groups.
The sensitization program aimed to raise awareness among residents about the available support from the government for vulnerable children and encourage parents to prioritize education for their children. Participants, like Madam Yenpoka Mba, commended the efforts of the department and expressed their commitment to investing in their children’s education.
It is essential for parents and communities to take a proactive approach in safeguarding the well-being and future of children. By addressing child protection issues and providing necessary support, we can ensure that all children have the opportunity to thrive and contribute positively to society.
