Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called for a thorough investigation into the recent clash between Naval officers and civilians in Tema. The confrontation resulted in the death of two civilians.
Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe emphasized the importance of the Police conducting a prompt investigation into the incident. He also urged the Minister of Defence Dominic Nitiwul to intervene and brief President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who is the Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), on the matter.
During an appearance on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe criticized the response from the head of the Public Relations section of the armed forces, stating that the handling of the situation was incorrect. He expressed his belief that proper protocols were not followed in escalating the issue to the appropriate authorities.
The clash occurred when a group of individuals attacked a vehicle belonging to the Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy during a festival in Tema Newtown. The crowd damaged the vehicle and wounded three naval personnel onboard. The injured officers were treated at the Tema Naval Base Medical Centre.
In response to the attack, the naval base security fired warning shots to repel a second attack orchestrated by another group of individuals linked to the festival. Two dead persons were later reported at the Tema General Hospital, although the cause of their deaths is yet to be determined.
Both the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces have launched investigations into the incident to uncover the circumstances surrounding the clash. GAF has urged all parties involved to remain calm while the investigations are ongoing.
Additionally, GAF issued a warning to the youth of Tema, cautioning them against any further attacks on military installations or personnel. The statement emphasized that any further aggression would be met with an appropriate response.
