Hope, an Accra-based delivery driver, has given his reasons for choosing his current employment over working for or with a Ghanaian company.
As Hope explained to Abigail Johnson during an interview for GhanaWeb TV’s Everyday People segment, he decided to work alone rather than for a corporation since he couldn’t support himself on the money he would make there.
“Looking at the companies, none of them can genuinely offer a good salary for an employee. Certain organizations pay you only GH¢700–800 a month when you first start working for them, and that hardly covers your transportation costs.
“We therefore concluded that working for a firm would not help us survive, and we began the delivery job,” he revealed.
Hope claims he made a “good decision” in accepting the delivery job, but he hasn’t been able to save any money for himself in the last 12 months.
“Our goal is to have more orders, but when we come, we don’t meet our expectations,” he explained as his justification. Our expectations are frequently dashed because all you can do is hang around until you get an order to provide something.”
Hope said that on good days, he makes approximately GH¢150, which he uses to buy fuel and food, keeping the remainder. On poor days, he makes GH¢50, which he also uses to buy fuel.
