Curtis was born in Rotorua in 1968 and raised there as well as on the Kapiti Coast. He participated in kapa haka, amateur theater, and rock ‘n’ roll dancing competitions as a child. But the drama didn’t just happen onstage. He dropped out of school, spent time as a state-appointed ward, lost his mother young, and then found work in a variety of laboring jobs.

Curtis had a little part in the movie “The Piano” for his debut in a major motion picture. But he didn’t get his big break and become well-known in New Zealand until he starred in “Once Were Warriors”, one of the most popular movies to hit New Zealand theaters.
