Herbert Wigwe, the co-founder of Access Bank and the chief executive officer of Access Holdings Plc, has reportedly passed away at the age of 57.

According to reports, the well-known Nigerian banker and businessman perished in a helicopter crash in California, United States of America, late Friday, along with a few members of his personal family.

He was on board the unfortunate helicopter together with his wife, son, and three other passengers, according to several media agencies covering the situation.

According to sources, the adjacent San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was notified of the event around 10:12 p.m. local time. The Eurocopter EC130 helicopter crashed around 10:00 p.m. local time, near Nipton, California, according to the US Federal Aviation Administration.

The helicopter fell east of the 15 Freeway at Halloran Springs Road, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Halloran Springs Road is located close to the California-Nevada border and around 80 miles away from Las Vegas.

The sheriff’s office stated they had not located any survivors, but they would not provide further details.

At approximately 8:45 p.m., the chopper departed from Palm Springs Airport and made its way to Boulder City, Nevada. Boulder City is located roughly 26 miles southeast of Las Vegas, the site of Sunday’s Super Bowl LVIII between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers.

The incident occurred just three days after on Tuesday, following unusually heavy rains, a U.S. Marine Corps helicopter crashed in the foothills outside of San Diego. There were five Marines lost.
