Sir Robert Charlton, better known as Bobby Charlton, was born in Ashington, Northumberland, England, on October 11, 1937. Football was a big deal in his family. While his mother, Elizabeth Ellen “Cissie” Charlton, was a major influence in his early career development, his father, Robert “Bob” Charlton, worked as a coal miner.

Professional footballers Jack (of Bradford City and Leeds United), George (of Leeds United and Chesterfield), Jim (of Bradford Park Avenue and Leeds United), and Stan (of Chesterfield, Leicester City, and Rochdale) were among the players Charlton’s mother’s side had produced.

During the majority of his club football career at Manchester United, Charlton was renowned for his attacking instincts, midfield passing ability, and powerful long-range shot. His physical fitness and endurance were also highly regarded. He received only two cautions in his career, one in a league game against Chelsea and the other in the 1966 World Cup against Argentina.

Jack, Charlton’s older brother and a member of the World Cup-winning team, managed international teams after serving as a defender for Leeds United. His successes at both the club and international levels made him one of just nine players to have won the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Champions League, and the Ballon d’Or.

The two female children of Sir Bobby Charlton are named Andrea and Suzanne. The children’s mother is Norma Ball. On an ice rink in Manchester in 1959, Norma Ball and Sir Bobby Charlton tied the knot in 1961. Suzanne worked for the BBC as a weather forecaster in the 1990s. Robert, Suzanne’s son, was one of their descendants. He is named after his grandfather.
