Leroy Calliste also referred to as “Black Stalin,” was a well-known calypsonian from Trinidad and Tobago who gained notoriety for his lyrics against the oppression of European colonists. On September 24, 1941, he was born.

He was born and reared by George and Elcina Calliste on Coffee Street in San Fernando as one of four children.

At the San Fernando Boys’ R.C., he was a student. He worked as a limbo dancer before starting to sing calypso and making his stage debut in 1959 at St. Madeleine’s Good Shepherd Hall. But it wasn’t until he joined the Southern Brigade in 1962 that he went to a calypso tent.

In the midst of the 1960s, fellow calypsonian Blakie gave him the moniker “Black Stalin.” Black Stalin joined the Kitchener Calypso Revue tent in 1967, and in the Calypso Monarch competition that same year, he finished in the top three.

Black Stalin had been ill ever since having a stroke in 2014. On December 28, 2022, his death was reported by his family.
He was named Calypso King of the World in 1999 after winning the Calypso Monarch competition five times.
