The clock is ticking for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the December 7 general elections draw nearer. With just eight months left, the party’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is yet to announce his running mate.
Senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has sounded a caution to the NPP, urging them to expedite the process of selecting a running mate. He emphasized that any further delay could pose a challenge to the party as time is not on their side.
While acknowledging the importance of thorough consultations before finalizing the selection, Dr. Asah-Asante stressed the need for a timely decision to avoid unnecessary delays in the campaign. He warned that prolonged delays could lead to heightened scrutiny and challenges for the chosen candidate.
“The party must be aware that time is running out. Consultations are crucial, but they cannot afford to take too long. By now, they should have a candidate with all the desired qualities to avoid unnecessary delays in the campaign,” he stated in an interview on Citi FM.
The Patriotic Movement for Bawumia, a pro-NPP group, also emphasized the importance of allowing Dr. Bawumia to choose his running mate without undue pressure from various factions. The group reiterated the need for a swift decision to ensure a smooth campaign process.
As the anticipation builds up for the election, all eyes are on the NPP to announce their running mate soon to kickstart their campaign effectively. Time is of the essence, and the party must act swiftly to avoid any setbacks in the race to the December polls.
