The Ministry of Education in Ghana has clarified that they are not introducing new uniforms for all basic junior high schools in the country.

According to Kwasi Kwarteng, the Public Relations Officer at the Ministry, the initiative will target selected model junior high schools.

This clarification comes after the Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, announced plans to repaint basic schools in blue and white and provide them with new uniforms as part of efforts to improve basic education in Ghana.

Speaking at a symposium called ‘The Free SHS Story’ in Accra, Dr. Adutwum emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming basic education and making it more appealing.

However, Kwarteng stressed that the new uniforms are not intended for all basic schools but rather for specific model junior high schools that are being built.

He also highlighted the Minister’s acknowledgment of the need for significant improvements in infrastructure, quality, and access in basic education.

On the other hand, Dr. Peter Partey Anti, the Executive Secretary of IFEST-Ghana, has expressed opposition to the Ministry’s decision to change uniforms for basic schools.

He believes that there are more urgent needs in the basic education system that should take precedence over uniform changes.

In conclusion, while the Ministry of Education aims to revamp basic education in Ghana, it is crucial to address the most pressing needs in the system before making changes like introducing new uniforms.

The focus should be on improving infrastructure, quality, and access for all students across the country.
