The Minister of Education in Ghana, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has announced a new initiative to repaint all public basic schools in the country.
The current brown and yellow colors will be replaced with blue and white to give the schools a more attractive and appealing outlook. This rebranding strategy is part of a larger effort to revamp basic education and make it more appealing to students and the public.
Dr. Adutwum made this announcement at a forum titled ‘The free SHS story’ in Accra on April 25, 2024. He emphasized that the change in school colors is just one of many transformational initiatives that the government is undertaking to improve the quality of education in Ghana. Additionally, the Minister revealed that the uniforms for public basic school pupils will also be changing from the current yellow and brown to the new blue and white colors.
This move is seen as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to primary education, as it strives to showcase that it is not solely focused on secondary education. The last time school uniforms were changed in the country was during the 2019/2020 academic year. In line with the government’s efforts to achieve universal primary education, free school uniforms have been distributed to junior high schools since 2010.
According to government data, thousands of pupils have benefited from the free school uniform distribution initiative, with plans to continue providing support to families in need. The Minister’s announcement has generated mixed reactions, with some lauding the initiative as a positive step towards improving the educational landscape in Ghana.
