The Asogli State Chiefs have come out strongly against the government’s proposal to rename Ho Technical University after Dr. Ephriam Amu.
This decision, first announced in February 2018, has not been well-received by the Traditional Council, who feel that key stakeholders were not adequately consulted.
During a press conference on Monday, April 22, the Asogli State Council expressed their disappointment with the government and the university’s governing council for moving forward with the renaming without engaging major stakeholders, including the Asogli State Council, the land’s custodians.
Togbe Adzi Lakle Howusu XII, representing the Asogli State Council, emphasized their opposition to the renaming, stating that it lacks justification and undermines the university’s established identity and heritage. The council views the decision as regrettable, poorly planned, and disrespectful, highlighting the failure to consider the perspectives of those most affected by the renaming.
In their statement, the Asogli State Council reaffirmed their strong opposition to renaming the institution without proper consultation with the chiefs and people of Ho. They described the government’s decision as unfortunate, misguided, and disrespectful, emphasizing the importance of engaging with relevant stakeholders before making such significant changes.
The Asogli State Council’s stance on the renaming of Ho Technical University reflects a deep-seated concern for preserving the university’s heritage and identity, ensuring that any proposed changes are made in consultation with those directly impacted.
