The Electricity Company of Ghana’s Ashanti West Region has successfully uncovered 74 illegal connections in the first quarter of 2024.

The discovery was made during a comprehensive monitoring exercise carried out by the Revenue Protection team, targeting various establishments like hotels, households, hostels, cold stores, restaurants, and institutions where illegal connections were suspected.

As a result of the exercise, an amount of GHS598,666 was recouped from the 74 illegal connections, highlighting the significant financial impact of these illegal activities. The initiative is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to combat power theft and ensure the sustainability of the electricity supply chain in the country.

Maxwell Dapaah, the General Manager of ECG in Ashanti West, emphasized the company’s commitment to eradicating power theft and illegal connections. The exercise covered operational areas such as Santase Apre, Ahodwo, Abuakwa, Offinso, Kronum, Sokoban, Patase, and Kwadaso, focusing on auditing electricity connections, meter integrity, and service cables used by customers.

During the exercise, it was found that some of the common illegal practices included meter bypass, unauthorized connections, and meter tampering. Mr. Dapaah highlighted the negative effects of these illegal activities on the company’s revenue mobilization and its ability to invest in service enhancement projects.

He also warned about the dangers associated with illegal connections, including fire outbreaks and the risk of electrocution, urging the public to report any suspicious activities to the nearest ECG office or the national task force hotline. In an effort to incentivize reporting, a 6% commission is offered on any recouped amount resulting from reliable information.

Mr. Dapaah further advised customers to prioritize bill payments and opt for prepaid services as a patriotic act to support the legitimate consumption of electricity. He emphasized the importance of addressing meter issues through proper channels rather than engaging in tampering practices.

The Ashanti West Region comprises eight operational districts, namely Abuakwa, Adum, Ahinsan, Bibiani, Danyame, Kokoben, Offinso, and Suame Districts.
