The Ashanti Regional branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is in uproar as staff members demand an apology from Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah for alleged mistreatment of General Manager Ing. Mark Wiafe Asumani.
Trouble started when the Regional Minister reportedly made disparaging remarks about the General Manager after a power cut at the Kumasi Technical University. Osei-Mensah allegedly ordered the ECG staff to restore power to the university during a revenue mobilization exercise, a directive that was not complied with.
In response, the Regional Minister is said to have orchestrated the arrest of the General Manager, who was later released on self-recognizance bail, much to the dissatisfaction of the ECG staff.
The Joint Unions in the region have issued a statement expressing their dissatisfaction with the Regional Minister’s actions, emphasizing that ECG does not report to him and does not take instructions from him on all activities, including Revenue Mobilization/Collection.
The unions are demanding an apology from the Regional Minister to the General Manager and the entire ECG, as well as the withdrawal of the case from the police station by a specified date.
