The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a stern warning to the Tema youth, cautioning that any further attacks on installations or personnel will be met with a decisive response.
In a press release signed by E. Aggrey-Quarshie on Saturday, April 13, it was announced that the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, has initiated investigations into the recent attack by certain Tema youths.
“The findings of the investigations will be disclosed in due course. The GAF expresses its condolences to the families of those affected and calls on all parties to maintain calm while the incident is under scrutiny,” the statement read.
The incident in question involved an attack on a vehicle belonging to the Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy by a crowd participating in a festival at Tema Newtown. The attack occurred on Friday, April 12, 2024, resulting in damage to the vehicle and severe injuries to three Naval personnel.
Following the confrontation, three suspects were apprehended by Naval personnel and subsequently handed over to the Tema Newtown District Police for further investigation. The mob, believed to be festival participants, later proceeded to attack the Tema Naval Base with stones and other objects in an attempt to free their detained comrades.
To protect the security of the Base and its vital installations, warning shots were fired to repel the attack. Subsequently, two civilians were reported dead at the Tema General Hospital, with the cause of their demise yet to be determined.
On the following day, Saturday, April 13, 2024, the mob launched another attack on the Tema Naval Base and the Naval Barracks at Tema New Town, resulting in significant property damage.
The GAF urges restraint and cooperation as investigations continue into the matter, highlighting the need for all parties to act responsibly amid escalating tensions.
